CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Well, you certainly have recovered your strength,” the doctor said. He stood up and repacked his leather bag. “That is, if you even lost any in the first place. Apart from the little problem with your memory, it is hard to believe you have ever been in an accident at all.”

“Yes, that little problem with my memory,” said Darcy dryly as he buttoned up his shirt. “How much longer do you think it will be? It seems like something that would be quite important to have, don’t you think?”

The doctor left his bag for a moment, and stood up to observe Darcy with a frown. Darcy was a fine example of healthy, virile male. He was tall and broad, and his fine shirt stretched over his broad chest and shoulders. His face was brown from his many rides outdoors, and his thick hair fell across his forehead in a way the balding doctor envied. He shook his head.

“To be frank, I am surprised it has not come back already,” he said. “There is no reason why it shouldn’t. You are in excellent health. You are not in a strange situation. You are surrounded by family and friends and everything that is familiar.”

Darcy’s face fell. He ran his hand through his thick hair and paced towards the window. It promised to be another beautiful day. The sun spread golden fingers across the lawn. Through the open windows, he could smell the fine scent of grass and woods. Birds rose lazily into the air, calling to one another. And yet at the doctor’s words, Darcy could not take any enjoyment in any of it.

“You think there is something more serious wrong, then?” he asked. “You believe I should have recovered it by now?”

The doctor walked towards him and laid a hand on his shoulder. “I do not think it is time to fret yet,” he soothed. “But I am wondering if it would be best to send you to London to see a doctor there. They have specialists in head injuries. If you have not recovered your memory by the end of the week, I should like to send you there, if you are agreeable?”

Darcy nodded, his gaze still fixed on the lawn. Elizabeth appeared in the garden below. She wore only a simple muslin gown, and her chestnut hair tumbled loosely over her shoulders. She smiled in delight at the early morning sun and took across the lawn at a run. The doctor followed Darcy’s gaze.

“She is a fine girl,” he said. “I examined her first as you requested, and she is already almost completely recovered. I have rarely seen such a resilient young lady.”

“I do not believe I have either,” said Darcy as his eyes followed her. His lips curved into a smile. “But then again, I would not know if I have.”

The doctor laughed uneasily. He was not used to grand patients making jokes, and he had a brief fear that Darcy would turn and scold him for his impertenance.
